Glenda Virgil, was the victim of physical, mental and emotional abuse by her boyfriend over a period of four years before getting the courage to leave the relationship.
When her boyfriend learned of her plans to leave him, he beat her for several hours and threatened to kill her, himself and their dog.
Virgil believing that her life would end if she did not act, shot and killed her abuser.
Prior to her 1987 trial, two experts concluded that Virgil suffered from battered woman syndrome and had a reasonable fear for her life at the time of the crime. But the jury convicted her of second-degree murder without hearing that expert testimony. Virgil was sentenced to 15 years to life.
